The Institutional Reality
You won't find this in any staff survey.
These are the things EU professionals think about at 11pm — but rarely say out loud at the office.
The Golden Cage
You have the salary, the pension, the security — and a growing feeling that you traded your ambitions for comfort. You wonder what happened to the person who moved to Brussels full of ideals about changing Europe.
Bureaucratic Suffocation
You spend more time in approval chains and committee meetings than executing meaningful work. You are intellectually capable of much more, but the system rewards compliance over initiative. This leads to an invisible burnout—a quiet, cynical exhaustion masked by absolute professionalism.
The Expat Question
You’ve lived abroad so long that home doesn’t feel like home anymore — but Brussels never quite became home either. Your children are growing up between cultures, and you’re not sure where you’ll land when this chapter ends.
Relationship Strain
Your partner may have compromised their own career trajectory or geographic preferences to follow yours. That sacrifice often sits silently between you. Managing this underlying guilt, and the unique challenges of the dual-career expat dynamic, requires a delicate and highly intentional approach.
The "What After?" Anxiety
You’re mid-career, well-compensated, and increasingly aware that the institution will continue perfectly well without you. Could you leave? Would you even know what to do? The pension keeps you in — but is staying the same as choosing?
Invisible Burnout
Your burnout doesn’t look dramatic. It looks like Sunday evening dread, a third glass of wine, scrolling until midnight, and waking up tired for another week of meetings that could have been emails. The canteen lunches, the sedentary desk life — you used to be different.
what we work on
Themes we explore.
Every engagement is different, but these are the patterns that come up most often — whether you’re at the European Commission, an EU agency, or another international organisation. You’ll likely recognise more than one.
Identity & Values
- Clarifying what matters to you vs. what the institution rewards
- Separating personal identity from institutional grade
- Reconnecting with pre-Brussels ambitions and passions
- Defining success outside of Staff Regulations
Career Strategy & Transition
- Career coaching for European Commission exit planning, internal progression, and mobility mapping
- Navigating the stay-or-leave dilemma with structured frameworks, not emotional spiralling
- Evaluating secondment and career-break options under the Staff Regulations
- Designing a viable exit architecture into the private sector or independent consultancy
Burnout & Resilience
- Burnout coaching for EU institutions — addressing the specific structural exhaustion these environments create
- Setting rigid boundaries within availability-obsessed institutional cultures
- Rebuilding physical resilience through evidence-based exercise programming for sedentary professionals
- Nutrition fundamentals and mitigating the compounding effects of chronic stress
Performance & Focus
- Building personal productivity systems that survive highly bureaucratic environments
- Navigating chronic procrastination and institutional friction
- Strategic visibility without engaging in toxic office politics
- Managing internal motivation when the daily work feels disconnected from your values
Who this is for
Designed for professionals across EU institutions and international organisations.
European Commission & Parliament
Administrators, policy officers, and senior staff navigating the complexities of institutional life, career progression, and the weight of Brussels bureaucracy. Whether you’re an AD5 finding your feet or an AD12 wondering what’s next — career coaching tailored to European Commission life.
EU Agencies & Bodies
Professionals across the EMA, EFSA, Frontex, Europol, and other agencies — often in smaller cities, with the added challenge of geographic isolation. The institutional pressures are the same; the support networks are thinner.
NATO, OECD & International Organisations
Staff at NATO, the OECD, the Council of Europe, SHAPE, Eurocontrol, and other international bodies. The institutional cultures differ, but the challenges — career stagnation, expat fatigue, burnout — are remarkably similar. Coaching for international organisation professionals who face the same pressures in a slightly different context.
How we work together
Structured, confidential, and entirely outside the institution.
This isn’t HR, it isn’t therapy, and it has nothing to do with your appraisal. It’s a private space to think clearly about what matters to you. All sessions are online via Zoom — wherever you’re based.
An honest conversation
We start with a free 45-minute consultation. You tell me what's going on — the real version, not the version you'd tell a colleague. We decide together if working together makes sense.
Clarity on what actually matters
Using structured, evidence-based methods drawn from cognitive-behavioural coaching and positive psychology, we cut through the noise and identify what you genuinely want — not what the institution expects of you.
Small systems that hold
We build practical routines — for your energy, your time, your focus, your wellbeing — designed to work within the reality of your schedule, not against it. No motivational platitudes. Real tools.
Steady progress, honest feedback
Weekly or fortnightly sessions where we track what's working, adjust what isn't, and keep you accountable to the life you're building — not just the career you inherited.
About
I studied European policy at two of the UK's top universities. Then I chose a completely different path — and that's exactly why I can help you.
I hold a BA in European Studies from the University of London, an MSc in European Policy Studies from the University of Bristol, and a PhD in Education. By every measure, I was headed for an institutional career. Instead, I chose independence — building my own practice from scratch, transforming my habits, and designing a life on my own terms.
That experience — knowing the world you’re in, understanding its pull, and having navigated the question of whether to stay or go — is what I bring to our work together. I’m not a career coach who Googled “EU institutions” last week. I understand the culture, the language, and the specific pressures of your professional world. That’s why coaching for EU professionals is all I do.
I also work with medical professionals through a separate practice, helping physicians and specialists navigate burnout, career transitions, and performance. The challenges are remarkably similar: brilliant people, trapped in systems that don’t reward the qualities that made them brilliant.

evidence base
This isn't self-help. It's supported by clinical research.
Professional coaching has been evaluated in randomised clinical trials published in JAMA Internal Medicine and JAMA Network Open. These studies found that structured coaching led to significant reductions in burnout, emotional exhaustion, and interpersonal disengagement among professionals working in high-pressure institutional environments — the same environments that EU and international organisation staff navigate daily.
